Morocco’ s Museums
At the Threshold of Tomorrow
Dossier curated by Issa Makhlouf
Amuseum is not merely a building where objects are preserved. It is a nation’ s way of remembering itself, presenting its image to others, and questioning its past as it looks toward its future. Seen in this light, what Morocco has witnessed in the museum field in recent years is more than a surge in infrastructure and facilities. It is a profound transformation in society’ s relationship with its memory and creativity.
With the establishment of the National Foundation of Museums and the opening of the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat in 2014, Morocco’ s museum landscape entered a new phase: existing museums were rehabilitated and reopened in contemporary forms; specialized museums emerged to celebrate crafts, the arts, and the sciences; and private initiatives turned the lives of creators, along with fashion, perfume, and cinema, into subjects for display and reflection. In many cities, museums have become cultural and tourist destinations, spaces for learning and encounter, and drivers of local development.
This dossier observes and chronicles this transformation and offers an objective portrait of it. It takes the reader on a journey that begins with ethnographic and heritage museums, whose arts and crafts reveal the plurality of Moroccan memory; passes through archaeological museums, collections of modern and contemporary art, and the museum of photography and the visual arts; and ends with private museums born of the passion of individuals and institutions.
Today, the world is turning one page and opening another, stepping into a digital age that is reshaping memory and how it is preserved and presented, while also redefining the museum, its role, and its relationship with its visitors. Morocco’ s museums now stand at the threshold of this future. MATAHEF. COM
