The Birth
"Pierre Gobron and his two sons, Julien and Tim decided to work together in the Micro-brewery “Les 3 Fourquets”, based in Courtil, a small village of Luxembourg Province. We brewed there different beers, but only one remained, and the name Lupulus was found, because of its hoppy character. The Latin name of the hop is “Humulus Lupulus.” We kept only “Lupulus,” and added the slogan “Just Fabulus” to promote it. At that moment the beer was amber and spiced with thyme, but the recipe evolved to the well-known Lupulus, still with a little bit of thyme but now with a golden color."
The Mission
" Lupulus is a beer for everybody. We don’t want to focus on a small public of Beer-specialists. We want to propose beers with a special and unique character, but that everybody can enjoy. Equilibrium is a term that can define Lupulus quite well. Our goal is to propose a top quality beer and to make sure that every beer-enthusiast can taste it. "
The Difficulty
"The main difficulty was to bring the beer everywhere. We received orders from all over in Belgium but also from abroad, but when you start, the clients want to taste it, try to sell a few boxes, but not full pallets! Of course, you can take your car and drive around the country, but then, when do you brew? It took some time to bring the beer to the wholesaler, and Lupulus was accepted as a reference for Belgian craft beers, so now, they can afford transport for larger quantities because they have regular consumers."
The Changes
"Only a lot! (laughs) The organization changes every day. The biggest change was the brewing installation. Until 2015, we brewed in an old farm where the Lupulus Bar is situated, with a 10HL microbrewing installation. Since, we moved just 50m behind, with a brand new building, a new 40HL installations, a new bottling station, new wastewater treatment plant, new storage, etc.… We grew from 3 persons to 10 persons in 2015, and almost 25 today!"
