When I was in Boston last September, attending the IASP World Congress on Pain, many presenters flooded my brain with so many ideas for future stories that I had no clue where to start for the first 2019 issue—kind of like choosing a show to watch on Netflix. However, I had a little bit of indirect help from Chloë Bradley a few months ago when she started a group called “Biopsychosocial Spa” on Facebook. I asked myself, “Why not do a theme on this?”
Since I work at a spa, how would I and other massage therapists who work in such setting apply pain science, neuroscience, psychology, and other disciplines to their clients? Given that most of my clients (at the spa and outcalls) suffer from some form of pain, I think there is a need for such practical application.
Since I adopted the biopsychosocial model of pain and health to what I do, my work has gotten easier than the early days as a noob. More listening, more encouragement, and no fear-mongering messages.
This probably won’t be the last time we address this theme since there is so much to explore. Well, I hope you will get to apply some of these ideas presented here to your workplace. Let us know if there is something you would like to us to discuss in future issues.
