It’s amusing to me how one conversation on social media last year could lead to a mini-adventure in Norway, Germany, and the Netherlands last spring. Not only was this my first visit to Europe, I also met many bright and progressing minds in physiotherapy and other manual therapies at the 2018 PainCloud Conference in Oslo. It was like an echo to the San Diego Pain Summit that I was familiar with, and I was glad that science-based practice is gaining grounds across the Atlantic.

I also met a close friend in Amsterdam who had given me a different perspective on chronic pain, particularly in coping, adaptation, and acceptance. While CRPS is uncommon, understanding its nature can yield clues for us on how pain works and what both the therapist and patient/client can do to work. In some ways, it is similar to other types of pain that we are more familiar about, such as phantom-limb pain and chronic hip pain.

So does chronic pain have a common theme? A common root that can help us explain pain better to our patients/clients and have better ways to help them reduce, manage, and cope with their pain? Well, this is why we’re telling the story of CRPS.
