30 years young!
As MASC enters its 30th year, we have much to celebrate: many
new members to the staff team, a brand-new board of directors,
wonderful artists from diverse communities representing all
disciplines as well as a host of strong, engaged partners,
funders and volunteers. Today, as throughout the past three
decades, our work is rich, with artists offering programming to
audiences across Eastern Ontario and West Quebec. We now
work with 210 artists and reach over 120,000 participants
offering performances, workshops and residencies in school
and community settings.
MASC was co-founded by Jennifer Cayley and Jan Andrews 30
years ago and called “The Chance to Give”. In 1989 Jan and
Jennifer planned an event for the National Library of Canada
featuring professional artists from diverse backgrounds to be
part of a public exhibit, to which students were invited. Jan and
Jennifer invited Menaka Thakkar, a professional dancer from
India who had recently arrived to Canada to participate.
Menaka said she would be thrilled to be involved, saying that all
those who emigrate to a country just want a CHANCE TO GIVE
back. And so, “The Chance To Give” organization was born, the
name of which was later changed to MASC.
We invite you to peruse these pages, get to know our new and
enthusiastic MASC team and our exciting new diverse board of
directors who bring vast experience to the organization. You’ll
learn about the amazing opportunities MASC offers to people of
all ages as well as our upcoming 30th anniversary. Have a read
and get involved! Register for Festivals, nominate your students,
donate to our 30th anniversary campaign or invite an artist into
your community! There is much to look forward to in this
coming year; please join us in celebrating MASC’s 30 years of
bringing the arts to you!
