Workshops
Art in my Sandbox (Grades: K - 3) A playful
introduction to Animation. Playing in sandboxes has
been proven to calm the mind. Draw, write and create
in a tabletop sandbox, recording the process with a
camera. Throw in some shells, rocks and figurines and
see where your imagination will take you!
Animation on the Light Table (Grades: K - 12/sec V)
Using natural materials such as pine needles, grains,
sand and adding cut-out characters, students will
manipulate objects on a light table and film them.
Students will be encouraged to watch and correct
their actions; sounds and titles will be added (time
allowing), all resulting in a beautiful and smooth
silhouette animation. Older students will begin the
process with storyboards and all animations can be
tied to current themes. In a one-hour workshop
students will be introduced to animation, animating
2D shapes on creative backgrounds.
Pixilation (Grades: K - 12/sec V) This type of
animation uses real people as the objects; they
are moved and photographed after each small
step. The result is an animation where the
students will fly or slide through the
classroom, get carried around in a giant hand,
get picked up by huge fingers or speed around
in chairs converted to race cars. The end
result will be a short, quirky video.
Poetry in Stop Motion (Grades: K - 12/sec V)
Explore the basics of animation as students
put images to collaboratively written
stories. Students will record their voices
reciting their piece of writing and then animate it
using different techniques. The resulting video will
be a poetic animation movie with sound and credits.
