he story of the big ten started in March of 2007. I had arranged a group from MarylandWhitetail.com to do a shed hunt, our first organized outing. We all met up early Saturday morning, March 3rd. After we told stories and talked for awhile, we decided to hit the woods. We all had two-way radios, and almost immediately the radios were screaming, “Found one!” About that time, Tom Paul (aka Headhunter) found his biggest shed to date - a huge 87”+ freak shed. About 10 minutes after Tom found his shed, I heard Steve Staple (aka Deershed) say he found a big 5-point side!
Five minutes went by and Steve found another huge 5-point side! I only knew he had found a good set; it was not until after we all met back up did we realize just how big this buck was. The sheds have 26” main beams, 13” G2, and 12” G3s, and very conservative estimate has this buck around 184”.
Then, in February 2008, I was shed hunting a private farm 3-4 miles from where Steve found his big set in 2007. Right off the bat I found the best shed of my life - a 78” 5-point side. I was so excited I was sending pictures to everyone. After combing the woods for a few hours, I spotted another huge 5-point side. I started screaming that I found the match! I ran over to the shed and took a ton of pictures. I picked up the shed and after looking at it for a few minutes, I realized it was not a match to my first huge 5-point side; it was from a different buck and bigger. This shed scored 83”, and about this time it dawned on me that this huge 83” shed was off the buck Steve found the year before. I could not believe this buck had such a large home range. I found my two biggest typical sheds ever in the same day, off of two different bucks. I spent about 50 hours looking for the matches to both of these bucks with no luck.
