Welcome to the second issue of the Marylandwhitetail Magazine!
Now, I hate to break it to you, but chances are that neither you nor I are going to kill the next world record whitetail. Yet, we will still sometimes risk life and limb for that one, slim possibility of success on something much less. By this time last season, several of our fellow hunters were found lifeless below their stands. Hunters just like you or me and you can bet none had a clue this would be the day it all ended. Even if they were on the trail of the next world record, it was not worth the price they paid.
We are halfway through the season now. Take a few minutes before you climb up into that cold tree and recheck your stands, from their belts to their bolts. You might also have a belt-on t stand with a strap that's 4-5 years old. As trusty as it may look on the surface, go and spend the 20 bucks to put a new one on. A little reassurance never hurt anyone.
I actually read a thread on our forum recetnly where two brothers were at odds with one another because one had killed a buck after he was asked not to until after youth season had passed, so the other brother's son would have a little better chance of getting a crack at one. Two wrongs don't make a right, guys. Remember, "It's just a deer." In fact, it seems that, several time a season, I find myself reminding people of that fact, or even saying it to myself: "It's just a deer."
No matter if it's life, limb, family, or friend, none of them are worth losing over "just a deer". That said, I hope you're all having a great season so far. If not, there is still time to make it one to remember. Just try to remind yourself and your fellow hunters: "It's just a deer."
