can copy from the B&C website. A minimum drying period of 60 days is required for having your trophy scored for the Maryland Trophy Deer Contest.
Remember: Measure one side at a time.
• Main Beam
It is measured along the outside edge, from the lowest point on the pedicel (burr) above the eye socket to the tip of the main beam. Trophy class beams are usually 13 plus inches.
• Inside Spread
This is the greatest distance between the inside of the main beams at a right angle to the skull. If the main beams angle outward, the inside spread could be tip of the main beam to tip of the other beam.
• Tine Length
To be counted as a point, the projection must be an inch or greater. It is measured on the outside of the tine from the tip to a line that separates main beam bone from tine bone. Lay your tape across the main beam and draw a line where the tine joins it. Adult stag antlers are normally 3X3, including the beam. 4X4s are rare.
• Circumference
These are always taken at the narrowest spot and there are always three measurements on each antler, unless there is an extra point; then four measurements. One measurement between burr and brow tine or hook, one between the brow and G-2, and one half the difference between the G-2 and end of the main beam. If there are two points per side, the same measurement is used for circumference two and three.
• Score
Add the inside spread, the lengths of the main beams, length of the tines, and the circumferences. This total is called the “gross score”. To get the final score, “net score”, subtract the difference of each measurement on the left side compared to the right side and any non typical points (rare with sikas), and you have the final score.
