Mary lived with an aunt and uncle, and began working with Junior Achievement and the YMCA. Becoming a regular on city busses, she learned her way around the city. She spent time with older adults, helping them cook and clean to earn a few extra dollars, and knowledge. She enjoyed just listening to them, learning, taking mental notes. Willingness to listen and hard work took her through college.
It was in the State House of Representatives, Mary Waters earned the nickname,‘ Quiet Storm’. She doesn’ t always say what she’ s feeling, but at the right moment she speaks up, armed with all the information needed to tackle the issues of the day.
As a candidate for the Detroit City Council, Mary’ s supporters know that she can make a difference.“ I am not easily intimidated,” she says.
Waters, a long time environmental advocate, breast cancer survivor and champion for working families vows to push to regulate industrial companies and limit environmental contaminants that are causing asthma and cancer in Detroit, which suffers from some of the highest rates of these diseases in the nation. She wants to protect the Great Lakes while working to ensure safe, affordable drinking water for city residents. She also vows to continue her advocacy for raising the minimum wage so that working Detroiters can care for their familes with dignity.
By fighting for fair wages, affordable water and environmental justice, Mary Waters is keeping the promise she made to her family to go out and make a difference.
