The Deal-Breaker Before your Big Day
Ladies, let’s be real with ourselves for a minute. There are enough douchebags in the world that are able to populate a small country. You’ve gone from guy to guy, hoping that the new one would be different from the previous until you finally find your perfect match. At this point, you’re in a serious and committed relationship and before you know it, he’s going to bend down on one knee. Everything at this point in your life will be perfect. The moment he asks you The Question you'll see rainbows and butterflies. BUT, there's one crucial question you have to ask yourselves before walking down the aisle: Am I being the true me or have I just remodeled myself into reflecting my man’s desires?
With a little help from Regina Barreca, an American professor in English Literature and Feminist Theory and an academic and humorist, her article “Getting It” really provides a lot of insight on women and the way in which we fashion ourselves to laugh at a man’s joke. Barreca suggests, “We are supposed to ‘fake a passion that’s bound to turn men on,’ meaning that we’re supposed to read our part of the script correctly. We are supposed to give the desired response instead of expressing whatever response is actually our own. That piece of advice is from a recent issue of Cosmopolitan by the way, and refers to showing enthusiasm for sports even when you don’t have any. The idea that women should be interested in what bores them – or laugh at what they do not find funny" (Barecca 5). Why should we read a script to act a certain way when there shouldn't be a script to begin with?
