Martensville Co-op Nears Completion

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
The Martensville Co-op Grocery store is nearing completion . Construction on Martensville ’ s newest addition has been moving along at a rapid pace , with paving of the parking lot now complete , refrigeration and fixtures in place , and ordering and stocking in full swing . Currently , equipment in the store is being set up and tested to ensure everything is in perfect working order for the target opening date of October 28th that has been announced for the 30,000 square foot store , located in Black Iron Crossing . The new store will have a soft opening , with plans for a grand opening in spring 2017 . “ We are looking forward to the new store opening in Martensville . People don ’ t want to end their day by having to do all of their shopping in Saskatoon and stand in lines , so we are happy to be able to provide more convenience with the Martensville Co-op location ,” Harley McClughan , Saskatoon Co-op Operations Manager , explained .
News of the Martensville Co-op grocery store was first announced in June , 2015 . The new store will include a fresh meat department with in store cut meats , a full produce department , an in store bakery , and deli services including the Market Town Chicken program , plus a full grocery offering . The new location will employ approximately 75 staff . Numerous residents from Martensville and surrounding areas were hired during a job fair held at the Martensville Baptist Church Wednesday , September 7th . Saskatoon Coop sent a letter to all employees that are currently working at the Martensville Super Valu , inviting them to apply within the new grocery store . “ We have several employees from the Super Valu that will be working at Co-op , so shoppers will be able to see some familiar faces ,” McClughan stated .
In past years , the City of Martensville conducted a survey on commercial developments and once the results were received , it was clear that there was need for the new food store . Results showed that approximately 70 % of residents were travelling elsewhere to shop for groceries , and over 90 % were shopping for household goods outside of Martensville . “ A grocery store was on the top of the list for residents when it came to new development they wanted to see in the city , so we were confident the store will be a popular shopping location ,” Dillon Shewchuk , Martensville ’ s Community & Economic Development Manager , stated . “ These large brands like Co-op obviously continue to see the benefits of being here , and as the population continues to grow , we expect to see more business and commercial growth in the city ,” Shewchuk added .
Once open , the hours of operation will be the same as the Saskatoon and Warman food stores , being Monday to Sunday from 8am to 10pm . You will be able to view flyers online by visiting www . saskatooncoop . ca .

Utility Rate Increase for Martensville Residents

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
At the October 4th City of Martensville Council meeting , Council approved a consumer utility rate amendment that will raise water rates by 10 %. “ The SaskWater portion is 7 % and is part of a two year rate adjustment for 2015 and 2016 . The City ’ s 3 % portion is to cover inflationary changes to our annual operating costs ; such as staffing and maintenance , as well as capital costs relating to the water and sewer infrastructure to ensure we can fund future capital asset replacement needs ,” Leah Sullivan , Director of Corporate Services for the City of Martensville , explained . This increase will result in the consumption rate increasing from $ 3.21 / cubic metre to $ 3.53 / cubic metre .
SaskWater is the supplier for potable and / or non-potable water to communities , or rural pipeline groups , who then re-sell the water to the residents of those communities . For Martensville , the water is purchased from SaskWater , and since Martensville owns the distribution systems that bring the water to the homes , they have additional costs associated with owning and operating the distribution systems . SaskWater ’ s rate adjustments mean that the City of Martensville will have an increased price when purchasing the water .
Mayor Muench commented on the rate increase through his Facebook page , stating that in September ’ s Committee of the Whole meeting , council received a Waterworks System Assessment ( WSA ) from their engineers , Catterall & Wright . “ The assessment essentially provides a complete review of our community ’ s water distribution system and what is required to maintain , operate and replace those assets ,” Muench explained . In a previous post , Muench had noted that the City of Martensville is nearly at full cost recovery , approximately $ 3 short / water meter / month or 97 % and that in order to achieve full cost recovery , the recommendation is to increase the base rate from $ 12 to $ 31 while reducing the usage rate from $ 3.21 ( soon to be $ 3.53 ) to $ 2.38 . “ This would capture that missing $ 3 shortfall while redistributing how the asset is funded by all of us , as residents and / or business owners . Having a clear capital asset replacement plan for all of our infrastructure , I believe , is an absolutely critical component of our community ’ s financial health moving forward . Completing the water distribution aspect is an important first step ,” Muench added .
