Don ’ t Just Sit There

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger The Martensville Athletic Pavilion was host to a presentation about the Hazards of
Sitting Wednesday , October 19th at 3pm . The presentation was free to the public .
Through the presentation at the MAP , Charlene Welgush , Physical Activity Coordinator with the Saskatoon Health Region , offered numerous options that people can use to help lower their risk of health issues associated with sitting . Welgush provided facts stating that physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for death worldwide , behind high blood pressure , tobacco use and high blood glucose , and approximately 3.2 million people die each year due to physical inactivity .
Those attending learned that there are a number of health concerns that can be attributed to sitting for long periods of time . Some of these concerns include obesity and conditions such as high blood pressure , high blood sugar , abnormal cholesterol levels and more . Too much sitting can also contribute to the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer , with physical inactivity being the main cause for approximately 21 % to 25 % of breast and colon cancers , 27 % of diabetes and 30 % of heart disease . The health issues listed above are just the tip of the iceberg , as continuous sitting can also lead to issues with your organs , brain , back , shoulders , muscles , legs , and more . Effects of sitting can lead to heart disease as well as diabetes , as the pancreas produces an abundance of insulin in an inactive body . In 2011 , a study that was done proved there is a decline in the body ’ s insulin response after just one single day of prolonged sitting .
Information from the Mayo Clinic compares adults that spend less than two hours a day in front of the TV , or other screen-based entertainment with those who spent more than four hours a day . The adults that spent a prolonged time sitting had a nearly 50 % increase in risk of death from any cause , and a 125 % increased risk of cardiovascular disease .
The reason that sitting for extended periods of time is so harmful to your body is because when sitting , fewer calories are used compared to when standing , and there is little effort used from muscles . Information provided by Welgush states , “ Muscle activity needed for standing and other movement seems to trigger processes related to the breakdown of fats and sugars within the body . When you sit , these processes stall , and your health risks increase .” Welgush recommends sitting for no more than 30 minutes at a time and standing as much as possible throughout the day . For people that find they are sitting for an extended timeframe , Welgush recommended setting a timer to remind you to stand up and stretch , even for just 5 minutes . Periodic stretching throughout your day will help to reduce muscle tension , improve circulation , reduce anxiety , stress and fatigue , and increase mental alertness . Several examples of stretches that can be used were provided and can be found be visiting www . in-motion . ca / uploads / tools / Get _ Fit _ You _ Sit . pdf .
