Woman Sentenced in 2014 Accident That Left Victim With Life-Altering Injuries

Many residents of Martensville and surrounding areas remember the tragedy that struck the night of April 18 , 2014 at approximately 7pm , when local resident Peri Boehm was struck by a minivan and ended up fighting for her life on the side of Highway 12 .
Treacherous road conditions led to Boehm ’ s vehicle sliding into the ditch , and helpful motorists that were passing by in pickup trucks pulled over to help Boehm and her teenage son . As they were receiving help from the kind strangers , Boehm stood beside one of the vehicles , and in the blink of an eye , her life changed forever . A minivan , driven by Brenda Jean Rabbitskin , a 56-year-old from Whitefish First Nation , struck Boehm , sending her flying 50 feet into the air before landing on her left side . “ I had many injuries . I had a broken left ankle ; both of my knees were blown out . They were dislocated . I had damaged my ACL , MCL , PCL and LCL on both legs , my ligaments were non repairable on both legs so I have cadaver ligaments in my legs . Also my tibias were broken in both legs . My fibula was broken in my left leg .

My left shoulder was broken in 3 places . I had an 8 hour surgery to fix all my broken bones . I also had to have a blood transfusion during my surgery because of the loss of blood . I have a plate and 4 screws in my left shoulder , a screw in my left ankle as well I have a plate and screws in each of my knees ,” Boehm explained .
Boehm , a wife and mother of four , spent three weeks at Royal University Hospital and an additional five weeks at City Hospital following the accident . Following the incident , Boehm had been told that generally , only 2 % of the population will survive this type of accident . “ There were so many things on my side . The fact that a police officer was first on the scene of my accident as he was driving two ladies to work , happened to be two nurses . After I landed I was choking on my tongue and the nurses knew what to do , and literally saved my life .” Boehm added .
The sentencing for Rabbitskin took place Friday , November 18th , where Rabbitskin spoke about the accident . She recalled seeing Boehm flying through the air and noted that she has had nightmares about it . Rabbitskin also expressed remorse for what had happened and that Boehm ’ s teenage son witnessed the accident . Rabbitskin was sentenced to 10 months in jail , followed by two years of probation and will be banned from driving for three years following her release .
This past June , Rabbitskin had pled guilty to having a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit and causing an accident that resulted in bodily harm . At the time Boehm was hit , Rabbitskin had a blood-alcohol level approximately one and a half times the legal limit . As part of the probation , Rabbitskin was ordered to attend substance abuse programming , refrain from drinking , and avoid bars and lounges .

Illuminated Street Signs Discussed at City Council Meeting Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville is working together to better our community with growth and services . The recent approval of illuminated street signs in our city is predicted to do just that . The signs will be double sided and internally edge-lit ( LED ). The illuminated signs will do their job in diversifying Martensville and attracting the community as well as those in surrounding areas .
The signs are projected to be placed on the overhead arms of the traffic signals . Intersections affected would be ; the traffic signals located at Centennial Drive and Main Street , 3rd Street North and Centennial Drive North , where traffic signals are to be installed in the near future and 4th Street South and Centennial Drive South , which is a proposed part of the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure Interchange Project . Joe Doxey , City of Martensville Director of Infrastructure and Planning , explained that the City of Martensville is currently “ investigating installation options

FRIDGE NEWS within budget ” for the intersection at Main Street and Centennial Drive , as this intersection “ may be affected by the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure Interchange Project ”, expected to be complete by 2019 .

The benefits of having illuminated signs include greatly enhancing overall visibility , the distance a driver needs to slow down or make a lane change , enhance street recognition for pedestrians , and the overall aesthetic appeal to our city .
The disadvantages , however , would certainly be the cost . Based on estimates , the signs would cost approximately $ 2,500-3,500 each . This would increase the cost of major signalized intersections by approximately $ 10,000- $ 14,000 per intersection .
Travellers would agree that that the illuminated signs really make a difference to the overall outlook towards the city . Those who have witnessed the signs state that they appear modern , diverse , appealing , and add to the service of the community . Martensville is revolutionizing .
