Grade Fives Meet Gemeinhart Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger
Grade Five Students at Venture Heights Elementary school welcomed a beloved author into their classroom on the morning of Monday , January 23rd . Dan Gemeinhart made a special appearance to the classroom via skype-call where he was met with a room full of his biggest fans . The grade 5 class was on their very best behaviour as they greeted Gemeinhart and excitedly asked him their prepared questions about the novel and his other works as an author . As a class , the students read Some Kinds of Courage along with teacher , Ms . Mitchell . Mitchell stumbled upon the story prior to the school season and hoped that the students would love the story as much as she . “ To my surprise in late fall , they would yell at me to continue reading !” exclaimed Mitchell . The story is centred around themes of bravery , courage , and friendship , and the class enjoyed the novel to such an extent that they decided to make it into a movie . The chapters were then split amongst 28 students , and each group did well in portraying what they learned from the book as they put their work together using the school iPads . Students made their own scripts , props , brought costumes from home and were tremendously rewarded by their creation ; a 30 minute video that caught the eyes of Gemeinhart himself .
Gemeinhart answered many questions during their time together , and left them with a message of perseverance and determination . “ It took me ten years to finally be published , I had written hundreds of terrible stories that eventually got better and better than the next ,” explained Gemeinhart . “ It took a lot of determination and at times I was discouraged , but every story got me closer and closer to where I needed to be . Principal of VHS , Ron Biberdorf , congratulated Gemeinhart on his obvious resilience and vigor , and outlined the importance for the students to never give up and always focus on getting better .
VMS Had a Blast !
The VMS Grade 5-7 Gymblast was held on Friday , January 27th at the MAP . Gymblast is a jam-packed , fun-filled two hour assembly designed to help students with their teamwork and leadership skills .
