My Catholic heroes

My parents have been married for 23 years. What and how is their relationship?

My parents are my Catholic heroes of marriage as they try to live out the sacrament of marriage every day. They have committed themselves to one another wholly and are willing to sacrifice anything for one another. My parents were introduced to one another by my dad’s close friend; they dated for about one year and they got married on August 24, 1991. On June 22, 1996, my mom gave birth to my older sister.

When my parents got married, they promised each other that they would love each other “for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do them part.”They try to love each other in every circumstance; they want to include Jesus in their relationship. Tthough Jesus is present in their relationship, there will still be strains in their relationship as they are not perfect. However, as Jesus is a part of their relationship, they are encouraged and motivated by him.

My parents understand that marriage is a serious and important sacrament. Therefore, my dad tries to treat my mom just as he would treat himself. In the sacrament of marriage, there is sacrifice. Jesus loved us so much that he was willing to sacrifice his very own life. Just like Jesus' love for us, my parents are willing to give up anything for one another, not only for each other, but also for me and my siblings. Even when there are conflicts in the marriage, they try to love each other as love “can cover over a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). They understand that they are not perfect and that their relationship will never be without mistakes; however, they will try to love in any and every situation. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” The cords represent the relationship between a husband, wife, and God. If God is present in the relationship between the two, they will form a relationship which is not easily shaken.

My parents are teachers and servants in the Church. My dad was a missionary in Cambodia and he served the people there by fixing their teeth as he is a dentist. My dad was able to use his skills to serve others, all while he spreads the message of Jesus to the Cambodians. My mom, as well, went on mission trips and was able to spread the gospel to people who have never heard about Jesus. At church, my parents are involved in a camp where anyone is invited to come and participate for free. They are able to meet and interact with people in our local community and serve them. They do not expect to receive anything in return, but are willing to help without any payment. They believe in the Word and are committed to Jesus. My parents are not faultless, but if Jesus is present in their lives, they are able to do anything. I know they will continue to try to love each other no matter what happens. As well, my parents will try to continue to serve and teach others about the Good News.
