Issue Number 17 | October 2022
Written by Mr Norrie There have never been more opportunities to work or study in a different European country , and being able to speak another language is key to fully taking advantage of this . Globalisation means that there is an increasing need to use foreign language skills both at home and abroad . European Day of Languages is celebrated each year to raise awareness of the linguistic diversity and vast number of cultures in Europe . Marr College marked the event by holding an S1 Assembly on the benefits of language learning for work , health and culture . The assembly was organised and led by our S6 Language Ambassadors ( Izzy C , Rachel H , Chloe H , Libbie D , Giulia P and Callum P ).
We are incredibly fortunate to have many different languages spoken at Marr College and we showcased Turkish ( Efe E ), Dutch ( Reuben T ) and Italian ( Giulia P ) at the assembly . We were also joined by Coventry Wasps rugby player , Kiron MacDonald , who shared how his experience as a professional rugby player has been enhanced by his language skills . Many of our S1s participated in a language treasure trail , in which they had to guess the different languages that teachers spoke around the school . The S1 winner is Eilidh C – well done !
Whether you are planning to use languages for work , or simply order food on your holiday , languages are useful in all walks of life !
