The History and Modern Studies department kickstarted June by visiting Stirling with our S4 History cohort to see some of the locations which feature in their current topic, The Scottish Wars of Independence. Pupils visited the Bannockburn site and were guided through the fantastic immersive battle experience. Our guide Callum even added in some elements of local history about King Robert II and Dundonald Castle!
The experience consisted of an introductory film highlighting the events that lead to the battle, a presentation shown over a military style battle map describing the two days of the battle, floor to ceiling audio visuals depicting scenes from the battle and a final film explaining the aftermath of the battle from the perspective of Robert the Bruce.
Pupils handled weapons and got to envision the battle as though they were fighting themselves. The Bannockburn site offered pupils the chance to follow in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce in the memorial park and see the spot where he raised his royal standard.
In the afternoon we visited Stirling Castle where pupils got to connect with another key landmark which appears throughout our topic. We also spotted the Wallace monument which is a testament to his legacy and efforts throughout a crucial period in History.
