I had absolutely no intention on selecting this month’s cover as I neared deadline. The PUBLISHER’S Pen I’d lost my mother-in-law and an aunt within a two-week span during the month of August. Between that time, the Black Press learned that legendary journalist George Curry had died a heart attack victim. Black Folk have always believed the age old adage: “They run in threes.” And, I’m here to testify that can be a truth. We just hope they don’t touch our lives as directly as my recent chain-of-events. I cain’t speak for anybody else. I don’t even bother trying. All I know is that the bell MUST be answered when it rings. As press time approached, I was in my office on the Monday before Labor Day just around 3 p.m. The phone rings. It’s Tony McClean from Black Athlete Sports Network. He patches in his colleague Michael-Louis Ingram. Over the last six weeks or so, the three of us have been working out the details on a joint marketing agreement that requires a standing 9 p.m. conference call every Monday night. Six hours earlier than expected, I take the call. I must say that I was surprised by what these brothers wanted to share. With all the bloviating surrounding this kid Colin Kaepernick on social media, they invited me to serve as a guest on a special edition of their BlogTalk radio show, Soul Tree Radio – In the Raw! Knowing what I know about “perception”, you can bet your bottom dollar I took these brothers up on their offer. With the quickness.
