With the Marlborough Sportsperson of the
year awards coming up next month we
thought we would check in on our Junior
Sportswoman of the Year 2017 – Lucy Sheat.
Since the age of seven, athletics has been a major part
of Lucy’s sporting life. In the beginning it was only to
follow and join her siblings in their weekly sports, but
soon realised that she was a natural at sprinting. At
10 years of age she attended the South Island Colgate
Games and come home with two gold medals. This is
when she and her support crew realised she really was
fast! Knowing this was a much better result than she
was actually aiming for she decided it was time to take
sprinting a little more seriously. The next four years
she kept fit with running with her brother Matthew and
a training program from Michelle Stagg. Dennis Kale,
Lucy’s running coach began training her at the age of 14.
“Dennis is an incredibly dedicated coach and mentor
and has changed my running career forever” she says.
Having a squad to train with in Nelson this year has
helped her regain the fun and team environment back
that she had missed from her years of playing hockey
and other team sports.
When asked who has been her inspiration, it is very
clear that the whole of Marlborough has played
it’s part. “Growing up in Blenheim has been such a
privilege” says Lucy, explaining that the support from
local organisations and individuals over the years
has been incredible. “The generous volunteers and
sponsors who have allowed me to travel and compete
are the ones who inspire me! Thank you Marlborough!”
Even closer to home her inspiration comes from her
sister, Olivia. “She has shown me how to pursue
something wholeheartedly and that hard work gets
rewards.” When asked who she wishes to inspire, she
is too modest to think that she is inspiring, although is
keen to send a strong message for all young women.
“Figure out what makes you who you are and be it! Do
not be moulded by anyone else’s expectations of you.”
