This is the story of how two families from different walks of life , came together and offered support in the name of friendship .
The bond that formed between Gary Clissold and Jimmy Lore was unique . After working alongside each other in the viticultural industry for a couple of years , they discovered a common ground to build a foundation for friendship that would cement a lifelong connection and bring two families from different worlds together . Gary , Ange and daughter Isabella have had the unique privilege of getting to know Vanuatuan , Jimmy Lore , his family and his way of life .
From the tiny Island of Lelepa which is off the south western Pacific Nation of Vanuatu and inhabited by only 500 people , Jimmy began travelling to Marlborough each year to earn funds to send back to his family and the people of the village . The way of life on the island is far from the comforts of what we are used to . Water is very scarce for the locals and they have to travel to the mainland for water every day . There is no power , landlines , and essentials that we take for granted . All of the locals cook over outdoor fires and many have eye and respiratory problems due to the smoke created from outdoor cooking . Life is very basic . Health services and education is minimal .
Disaster struck in early 2015 , and the island was hit by Cyclone Pam and then by extreme drought which devastated the small island . Jimmy and his family were hit hard and lost
almost everything . Their friends Gary and Ange , back here in Marlborough wished there was something they could do . As a preschool educator , Ange was devastated to learn that the kindergarten on the island had been destroyed and only a small temporary grass hut , about the size of a standard bedroom in NZ , was set up to cater for the 30 children that attended . The kindergarten lost the few resources that they had in the cyclone and no resources or funding was granted back . Gary and Ange couldn ' t sit by and do nothing , so took it upon themselves to begin collecting used books , stationery , balls and so on , anything they could think of that would help the people of the island . Eventually they had collected enough donations to fill a container and ship it over .
The people of the island were overwhelmed . Ange says ‘ Vanuatu people are the most loving , caring , and friendly people that you could ever meet . They would do anything for you . We just need to support them by giving something back that they can really utilise in their everyday lives ’. Gary and Ange have now stayed with Jimmy and his family twice and plan do make the trip every year or so , taking with them more donations of resources and supplies for the community . Their young daughter , Isabella doesn ' t hesitate to mix with the locals and they are welcomed with open arms and made to feel as part of the family .
Here in Marlborough , we welcome many workers from the islands each year , wanting to make a better life for their loved ones back home . Their hard work and willingness to be included in our community is inspiring , and it ’ s with the kindness and selfless generosity of people like Gary and Ange that give something back , it shows us that one person can really make a huge difference to the lives of others .
