EMERGING BULBS
Other than the blossoms on the trees , the other wonderful sign that spring has arrived is right at our feet , with all the flowering bulbs emerging in succession from under the ground . First to arrive are the snowdrops , with their pure white nodding heads appearing under trees , and crocuses in shades of white , yellow , cream and purples , often glistening in the early morning sunshine dusted with the shimmer of a spring frost .
Then the daffodils appear , saying “ look at me , look at me ” blowing their own trumpets in yellow , orange and white and dancing in the spring breeze , and finally the tulips show up in a wonderful array of colours , just perfect for picking .
GET READY FOR SUMMER VEGE SEEDS
Summer vegetable seedlings are starting to arrive in the shops now and although it ’ s too early to plant many of them outside , you can pot them on into larger containers and grow them in a sunny sheltered spot outside , as long as you protect them from cold nights by bringing them inside or constructing a basic cold frame that acts as a mini greenhouse . Doing this will give them a head start , and by the time it ’ s warm enough to plant them out in October they ’ ll be bigger and stronger already .

SUMMER COLOUR
Summer colour such as petunia , impatiens , lobelia , and daisies , are also starting to arrive , perfect for planting out in containers or to brighten up our garden beds . They are all such wonderful value , flowering away happily for months on end from now until autumn .
ACCENTUATE TEXTURES AND LAYERS
A spring garden is a joy to be in , it ’ s a great time for planting as the soil and the sun start to warm up and the birds are singing all around us . All the plants I ’ ve mentioned here are available for planting now , with the exception of the spring bulbs . As loose bulbs you needed to plant them in autumn , but they are available now growing in pots and already starting to flower , just perfect to put on the table inside or out and they make lovely gifts .
AN ACT OF KINDNESS FROM THE GARDEN
Gardening is a wonderful communal activity , giving a friend or neighbour a hand to dig a new vegetable patch , plant a tree or mow a lawn is a lovely thing to do , the gift of your time is a kindness that is always so much appreciated and I really do think that growing and picking a few scented flowers from your own garden and giving them to someone you love makes the world a happier place .
