Inspired by fun finish which is ideal for furniture,” Wendi says.
Pru & Co was born of Pru’s desire to do something for herself
that would fit in with family life. Pru says the idea to establish
a furniture upcycling business came from her daughter’s
godmother, who was doing something similar in Hunterville. Most timbers absorb Voodoo Molly paint well, although
different shades of wood may result in a different colour. “It’s
helpful for us to view the furniture before making a decision on
colour,” she says.
Wendi who had a corporate job when Pru was thinking about
setting up a business, jumped at the chance to get involved. While the most popular colour requests are classic white and
antique white at the moment, Pru doesn’t shy away from the
use of colour. “Choose colours that work with your existing
landscape of colour,” Pru says. “Adding colour, whether you use
white or more out there colours is a great way to accessorise a
room,” Pru says.
“I really believed in her vision, neither of us knew if we’d be in
business a year, two years down the track, but it was a great
idea and sounded like a lot of fun,” Wendi says. “It doesn’t feel
like work, I absolutely love coming in every day.”
Lesley who has a background in administration has enjoyed
getting in touch with her creative side and discovered she
absolutely loves working with her hands. “This is the most
relaxed, most fun job I’ve ever had,” Lesley says.

Pru couldn’t be happier getting to work with some of her
best friends - ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ are a regular event. “They’re
brilliant at what they do, really creative, with an eye for detail
and depth of colour,” says Pru.
Have fun with colour
One of Pru & Co’s philosophies is celebrating New Zealand
products, including paint and fabric.
Wendi says they have experimented with a variety of paints, but
always return to Voodoo Molly - a range of water-based acrylic
paints designed specifically for furniture in a beautiful range of
vintage colours inspired by the Pacific. “It has a gorgeous silk
matt finish, it’s very easy and safe to use and has a good tough
Shabby or flush
Whether your style is shabby chic, rustic, retro or contemporary,
creativity is unlimited at Pru & Co, says shab queen Wendi.
Shab - or shabby chic - is a form of interior design that embraces
furniture that is pleasingly old and slightly worn. Think of the
slightly chipped edges of white furniture you might find in a
cosy cottage. But if you don’t own it, shabby chic furniture can
be created using almost any piece you have lying around. Wood
is best, and the more natural the timber, the better.
“Look around you, you’re sure to find some of the dark
timber furniture that was popular in the 70s, or the blonde
shade that was trending in the 90s. It’s not about covering up
imperfections, it’s all about making those imperfections pop”,
says Wendi.
And if shab is not your bag, a more slick and seamless look can
be achieved with a flush finish, which creates a smooth surface,
disguising any joins.
