PLANT NOW FOR SUMMER SUCCESS
If the soil is moist after winter rainfall, take advantage of the conditions to establish trees, shrubs and perennials before the heat of summer. Prepare a generous planting hole that comfortably accommodates the root ball. Add compost or other suitable organic matter where needed, position the plant at the same level at which it was growing in its container and firm the soil gently around the roots without compacting it. Water thoroughly after planting, even if the ground is damp. This helps settle the soil around the roots and remove air pockets. Newly planted trees and shrubs will need particular attention during their first growing season.
