On top goes your growing medium. It needs to retain sufficient moisture without becoming a heavy, waterlogged mass. The original terrarium guide suggests a layered system of drainage material, a barrier and potting medium.

The Starke Ayres Palm Peat Block is a useful horticultural growing medium and can form part of the substrate for your miniature garden. For a terrarium, combine moistureretentive material with a component that improves drainage and aeration rather than packing it tightly around the roots.

Once the substrate is in place, the fun starts.
Create height by mounding the growing medium towards the back or one side instead of making everything perfectly level. Add a few interesting stones, bark or pieces of untreated wood and then position the plants.
Think landscape rather than pot plant. A small rock can become a cliff. Moss can resemble a lawn. A piece of twisted wood suddenly becomes a fallen tree.
