GARDEN

A tiny garden can make a surprisingly big statement. From a lush forest under glass on a bookshelf to a waterwise succulent landscape on the stoep, terrariums bring gardening into spaces where a conventional flowerbed simply won’ t fit. Better still, you don’ t need a fish tank or specialised equipment to get started. Terrariums have been around for generations, but there is something about these miniature landscapes that feels particularly suited to modern homes. They take up very little room, can turn an ordinary container into a living feature and, if you choose the right plants, need surprisingly little attention. At its simplest, a terrarium is a miniature garden grown inside a container. Traditionally, a true terrarium is enclosed, creating a humid microclimate in which moisture is recycled. Today the term is also widely used for open glass containers planted with succulents and other plants that prefer drier conditions. The first decision, therefore, is not what container to buy. It is what kind of tiny world you want to create.
