ADVERTORIAL
Start the season with sparkling water
As the days get longer and South Africa heads into spring, it is time to give the swimming pool some attention. Even if the water still looks reasonably clear after winter, warmer temperatures can quickly encourage algae growth and expose problems with water balance, chlorine levels or circulation. A little preparation now will make the pool easier to maintain once summer arrives.
Start with a thorough clean
Remove leaves, insects and other debris, empty the skimmer and pump baskets, and give the walls, steps and floor a good brush. Vacuum the pool and check that the pump and filtration system are working properly.
The filter may also need attention after winter. A buildup of dirt, oils and scale can reduce its effectiveness, so clean or backwash it according to the manufacturer’ s instructions.
For an easy way to keep up with regular pool care, Agrimark currently has the Blu52 Big Easy Floater 1.6 kg on promotion. This multi-functional floater provides a convenient monthly pool-care solution designed to make routine maintenance simple. Get two for R299 and save R160. The offer is available in-store only until 26 September 2026.
pH: 7.2 – 7.6
Recommended range for balanced pool water.
Test before you treat
Clear water is not necessarily balanced water. Test the pool before adding chemicals so that you know what needs correcting.
PoolBrite recommends a pH of between 7.2 and 7.6, total alkalinity of 80 to 120 ppm and free chlorine of 1 to 3 ppm. Keeping the water correctly balanced helps chlorine work effectively and also protects pool surfaces and equipment.
If the water has become cloudy or green over winter, it may need extra treatment. Brush the pool thoroughly, correct the water balance and, if necessary, use a shock treatment to deal with algae and other contaminants.
Keep it moving
Good circulation and filtration are essential during the warmer months. Run the pump regularly and keep an eye on the filter, particularly when the pool is being used more frequently.
Continue brushing and vacuuming the pool even when the water looks clean, as this helps prevent dirt and algae from becoming established.
Summer conditions can also change water chemistry quickly. Heavy rain, hot weather and frequent swimming can all affect chlorine levels and water balance, so test the water regularly and check it again after periods of heavy use or rain.
A good clean and correctly balanced water at the start of the season will make ongoing maintenance much easier and help keep the pool sparkling through summer.
