Planning

As with any business it would be a good idea to write up a comprehensive business plan . This would start with doing research and seeing what is in demand in your area , and who you could supply to . You will also need to consider your space , what grows well in your climate and soil , what your set-up costs will be , as well as packaging options . The most important thing to establish is how you can make a decent profit , weighing up demand , resources , profit margins and so on . Other considerations include a name for your business , along with an identity for the brand , as well as how you will market your business , through a website , social media platforms and other channels .

Who is your market ?

Part of your business plan will involve defining your target market . There are several options to consider , and you could use any combination , depending on your unique situation . For instance , if

your location is central and lends itself to direct sales , you could sell your produce directly to the public . You could also do “ box deliveries ” in your area , with weekly boxes made up from what ’ s being harvested .

If supplying to resellers , consider whether you want to approach a big chain , or spread your risk and rather supply many smaller places .

Packaging could be as simple as biodegradable paper bags or thin boxes , which would be preferable if you are following “ green ” methods of farming . You could sell directly to local restaurants or hotels , or trade at local farmer ’ s markets in your area . You could also process your fresh produce to sell , and these could possibly be delivered , if you decide on an online ordering system . Opportunities abound – think outside the box !
