If you’ re lucky, you may even find the perfect material free through a community forum or group. Choose your“ steps” according to your budget, the length of the path and the other colours, textures and materials visible from the path.

Once you have your material, mark out each step by walking the path and placing markers. Then dig the lawn or soil to allow for the thickness of the paver or stone and set each one in place. Make sure you set your stepping stones perfectly if you’ re placing them on the lawn, as this makes it easier to mow without hassles.

The lush planted path

Planted paths are similar to stepping stone paths, except that between the stones you have ground cover that can itself be walked on. The ground cover fills the space around the stepping stones, making for a luscious green carpet to walk on.
