The post should be placed in an accessible location , such as directly next to the piece of furniture the cat prefers to scratch . Lead the cat to use the scratching post rather than the furniture with catnip , encouragement , or food . Although there are many sophisticated cat toys available , you can provide them with inexpensive toys or make them yourself , often using scraps of material . For example , a cat can have a great time playing with a ping pong ball in an empty bathtub , or egg cartons with treats inside , or a toy hung from a stick , or a laser pointer . Even crumpled balls of aluminium foil can keep them entertained . An aquarium with fish swimming around will also pique their interest and should hold their attention for a while .
