Eight years to solve one problem
The success did not come easily.“ In the early stages, coriander developed a root disease, and it took us eight years to solve that problem. Soil health was the problem and is our solution today. We used all our virgin soils, but as soon as we planted coriander on lands that were previously planted with the same crop, the plants tended to die within three weeks.”
The search for a solution led them to nematodes in the soil, which were damaging the roots. According to Roy, there was no easy cure apart from a strict rotation system.
“ We now plant eragrostis pastures for our sheep in winter to complete the rotation. We also treated the soil with prenematode products and put microbes into the soil to build it up.”
