There are also several short courses available which include courses that teach farm workers how to handle chemicals and dangerous products , the role of a health and safety representative and requirements of health and safety representatives and supervisors in times of accidents and incidents .

Other more practical courses include training as a tractor , forklift and spray pump driver or fire officer , and welding . A two-day first aid course is also available during which students are taught how to identify emergencies , alert emergency services , provide basic life support , and render first aid as determined by the condition of the patient . All courses will benefit the student
directly in his or her place of work .
Lerina Nel is the Coordinator at the Academy and manages all the schedules and logistics for the NQFlevel programmes and all the short courses .
“ Accredited service providers supply the training of farm workers to adhere to WIETA stipulations . If a producer has seven or more workers that need training , we go to their premises if they have a suitable venue . If practical training needs to be done , they should be able to provide the equipment for training purposes ,” explains Lerina .
“ We also conduct training at the various Agrimark branches where the necessary equipment is available . When it comes to the farmer development training , the courses are presented online , but students go to Porterville five times a year for contact sessions and a week ’ s practical experience . We do it this way to enable students to continue their full-time work or farming activities ,” says Lerina .
