When the growth slows completely and the leaves start to flop , the picking season is over and the plants should be dug out and put on the compost heap . With spinach , chard and many leafy greens , succession planting should be practiced – meaning you shouldn ’ t plant the same crop in the same spot , year after year .

Swiss chard , with its colourful stems and bright green leaves , is one of the most nutritious veggies

Swiss chard is extremely healthy , as it is very high in vitamins K and A , and contains vitamins B1 , B2 , B3 , B6 and C , as well as magnesium , copper , manganese , potassium , iron , choline , calcium , phosphorous , zinc , foliate , selenium and protein , and other minerals .
