While technology has potential, it cannot replace community action, vigilance, and functional partnerships with the police. A layered approach – combining branding, record keeping, active patrolling, basic technology, and legal follow-through – is still the most effective way to combat livestock theft in South Africa.
And most importantly, says Scholtz, trust and accountability must be restored in the justice system so that more farmers will once again feel it is worth reporting theft and following through with prosecution.
Until then, the question remains: is technology alone enough to protect South Africa’ s livestock?
The answer, it seems, is no – but it certainly helps.
