Capacity remains a concern
The Northern Cape has seven livestock theft units, but these are insufficient to cover the vast province. An eighth unit is in the pipeline. Scholtz says the same units are also tasked with investigating the theft of rare plant species and high-value wildlife such as rhinos and buffalo, further stretching their capacity.
Can technology help?
According to Scholtz, technology does have a role to play, but there are limitations. Most camera systems are not directly linked to police stations but to private control rooms.
“ When suspicious activity is spotted, it is reported to the police. We have good relationships with the livestock theft units,” he says.
