PET ZONE
is that hamsters prefer to be alone , rather than having another hamster companion . As far as choosing the breed goes , we recommend a Syrian hamster , as they are much easier to train and bond with , and are more peaceful than some other breeds . They live around four or five years .
Like guinea pigs , they will need a cage , bedding , a litter tray , toys and exercise equipment . You want a cage that is small enough to clean easily , but big enough to provide your furry friend enough space to exercise . Just don ’ t make it too tall , as your hamster might climb up and injure itself falling down . Like the guinea pig , the hamster needs daily exercise , and would appreciate some time outside of the cage every day , to run around , play and bond with its human . A play pen works well – alternatively , hamster-proof a room and allow it to play freely with human supervision . For comfort , you could use wood shavings , strips of paper or pieces of wool for your hamster ’ s bedding . He or she will soon let you know which is the preferred bedding .
Your hamster ’ s diet should consist of the right amount of healthy fats , proteins , carbohydrates , minerals and nutrients . Your best option is to stick to the recommended feeding guides of pre-packaged hamster foods and small amounts of cleaned greens , carrots and pieces of fruit such as apples . Don ’ t feed your hamster or guinea pig grapes or rhubarb , as these can be poisonous to rodents .
It is also important to consider that hamsters are escape artists and will get out , given any opportunity , so be sure to give your kids very clear guidelines around taking the hamster out of the cage for play-
