Pets and how to care for them

If you ’ re not ready to commit to a dog or cat and the kids are begging for a pet , there is always the option of a small pet that can bring just as much joy , with ( a little ) less responsibility . Guinea pigs and hamsters are fairly easy to care for , and don ’ t live as long as dogs and cats , so they won ’ t hamper any plans to move overseas in the future , or need to be rehomed if you move to a smaller place . They will also give young kids the opportunity to practise caring for a pet before you decide to take the plunge and add a dog or cat to the family .

Guinea Pigs

Let ’ s first look at guinea pigs . Guinea pigs are fun and adventurous little creatures that require hands-on care . You will need to make their environment as homely as possible and give them plenty of attention . They also prefer to live in pairs , so if you ’ re going to get one – consider making it two ! They will need a large cage ( or two ), bedding , food , snacks , feeding bowls and water bottles , a litterbox , and “ cage enhancers ”, which might include tunnels , training wheels , hideaways and mentally stimulating toys .

You can either give your guinea pigs an indoor cage or build one outside , as long as it ’ s climate-controlled and safe from any predators . Guinea pigs like a dry , safe , warm
