AROUND THE HOUSE
Living room
Depending on the size of your living room, you can either install a
permanent heating source like a fireplace or you can use a gas heater.
We suggest you place it directly in front of the coldest feet in the room.

A fan heater is the safest option for an office area. These units can
easily be switched on and off as the need arises. Usually, fan heaters are
fitted with an automatic reset thermostat to prevent overheating.

Wealth of wood
South African culture is unique and when touring guests
get entertained by an open fire like a braai, it definitely has an
intriguing effect. The type of wood you use in your braai and
fireplace is an important contributing aspect because each type
of wood has its own characteristics including burning time.
Black wattle can be used in the fireplace and for a braai. It
creates coals quickly but also cools off quickly. If you want to
have a quick braai with some friends this wood is the suitable
option. Because it is an invasive plant, environmentalists recom-
mend it to be cut down and encourage its use as an eco-friendly
firewood. If you are looking for big flames, use black wattle!
Kameeldoring / Camelthorn is a low moisture wood which
can be used for a braai because it gives long-lasting hot coals.
This wood is very heavy in weight and it takes a long time to
burn and burns at a high temperature. It makes almost no smoke
and gives off a natural musky fragrance.
Blue Gum is perfect for use in a fireplace, or even a pizza
oven. It burns slowly and holds the heat. Damp blue gum fire-
wood is also recommended for long, slow-burning qualities
instead of heat.
Sekelbos / sickle bush is a multi-purpose yellow-coloured
dry wood and is good for both the braai and the fireplace. Many
believe its natural oil enhances the flavour of the meat. The trees
are usually found in desert areas and therefore the wood dries
naturally which makes it such a good, hard firewood.
Rooikrans / red-eyed wattle is also a popular Western Cape
firewood for a braai.
