For Kroon, the heart of regenerative agriculture does not lie in a fixed list of practices, but in a shift in thinking.
Polyester and nylon may be cheap, but they come from non-renewable sources. Mohair, by contrast, is natural, renewable and biodegradable: a goat is shorn and the fleece grows back. A good garment can also last for years.
Animal welfare and the importance of transparency
The PETA issue also formed part of the discussion. Hobson’ s Chairman’ s Report referred to PETA’ s second campaign in January 2026, in which poor animal welfare practices were alleged on five RMS-certified farms in South Africa. Mohair SA’ s position was clear: any mistreatment of animals is unacceptable.
According to the report, the industry responded immediately by working with the NSPCA, commissioning independent veterinary inspections under the leadership of Dr Mackie Hobson, and supporting Textile Exchange in arranging Control Union’ s third-party audits of the identified farms.
The investigations found that three of the five farms showed no evidence of non-compliance. One farm had a minor non-compliance finding, followed by corrective actions, and one farm was found to be in serious breach of RMS requirements, after which its certification was suspended.
