A sharp mower blade makes a big difference. A clean cut helps the grass recover quickly, while a blunt blade tears the leaf and leaves the lawn looking pale and ragged. If the mower has been standing through winter, clean it properly, check the blades and make sure it is ready for regular use.

Never cut more than a third of the grass blade at a time. If the lawn has grown unevenly, rather mow twice over a few days than cut it too short in one go.

Open the soil before the rush of growth

Compacted soil is one of the biggest reasons lawns struggle in spring. If water lies on the surface, runs off, or the lawn feels hard underfoot, the roots may not be getting enough air and water.

Aeration is one of the best ways to help. Use a garden fork, aerator shoes or a hollow tine aerator to make holes in compacted areas. This improves oxygen flow, drainage and root development. It also helps fertiliser and water move into the root zone instead of sitting on the surface.

High-traffic areas, such as pathways to the washing line, children’ s play areas and spaces around patios, often need extra attention. These are usually the first places where a lawn thins out.

Level and repair thin patches

Once the lawn starts growing actively, you can level small dips with a light lawn dressing. Do not smother the grass. Apply a thin layer
