Storm preparation

If you know there ’ s a storm coming , cover , secure or move what you can . This includes smaller pots , light ornaments and hanging plants . You may want to take the patio umbrella out of the stand and place it somewhere safe . Also ensure that your patio furniture , garden tools and braai equipment are safely stored . If you are concerned about larger pots breaking or filling with water , perhaps move them out of the rain and closer to a wall , but not where there might be a wind tunnel . Support taller , more vulnerable plants with a stake to help prevent damage , but allow some give – if tied too tightly and not allowed to sway in the wind , they could snap anyway , defeating the purpose of staking them . Ensure your garden shed doors and windows , and any gates are properly closed and securely locked . If you are worried about any prized plants , rather remove them from soil that is likely to become waterlogged and plant them in pots to be sure they will be ok .
