Border collies are playful , protective and loyal , making wonderful canine companions , provided they are in the right environment . Originating all the way back to the 1700s , they were bred to herd sheep in the lowland and border counties of England and Scotland and were the loyal companion to many a livestock farmer . Today , they are still used for working livestock and can manage almost any type of herd , but because they ’ re so easy to train , they ’ re also used as service animals , whether as guide dogs for the blind or for police work , including search and rescue missions and drug and bomb detection .
PERSONALITY
Border collies are extremely intelligent independent thinkers , often able to use deductive reasoning and analysis when performing tasks . They are highly alert and responsive , and considered by many to be the most clever of all dog breeds . Because they were bred to be active , working dogs , they are best suited to farm life , or at the very least , to a more rural environment where they get plenty of daily exercise .
