Mulching is the golden rule: Bare soil in mid summer is an oversight. Mulch keeps soil cooler, reduces evaporation, and suppresses weeds. Use organic mulches such as bark chips, straw, or composted leaves. In very hot areas, even pebbles can be useful, but organic mulches add the bonus of improving soil as they break down.
