Heirloom seeds are seeds from plant varieties that have been passed down through generations , often within a family or community . These seeds can reproduce true to type , preserving the original plant ’ s characteristics . Heirloom varieties are valued for their genetic diversity , unique flavours , and historical significance . They are often contrasted with hybrid seeds , which are bred for specific traits but do not produce trueto-type offspring , and genetically modified seeds , which have had their DNA altered in ways that do not occur naturally . Heirloom seeds are cherished by gardeners who prioritise biodiversity , and preserving agricultural heritage .
DETERMINE IF YOUR PARENT PLANT IS A HYBRID OR AN OPEN-POLLINATED VARIETY .

by crossing two different plant varieties and generally don ’ t produce offspring identical to the parent plant . In contrast , heirloom seeds grow into plants that are true to the parent .
So , what are open-pollinated varieties , and how long do they last ? Open-pollinated varieties are like purebred dog breeds ; they maintain their specific traits as long as they are pollinated with the same variety . With proper care and planning , the seeds you save will stay true to type , preserving their distinct characteristics generation after generation , provided they don ’ t cross-pollinate with other varieties of the same species . Openpollinated varieties can be annual , biennial , or perennial . Annual plants , like lettuce , tomatoes , and peppers , flower , set seed , and die within a single growing season . Biennials , such as carrots and onions , flower in their second growing season after experiencing a cold period . Perennials , like apple trees and asparagus , live for several years , flowering and producing seeds over multiple seasons .
