MIKE
CAMPBELL
JULY 2014
Modern society has seen a shift in what it means to be male, and it’s not for
the better. In response, Mike Campbell has redefined today’s Alpha Male.
ook around any public space and
assess the males you see. Notice
any real men? The men we all want to be
– strong, confident, healthy, and
masculine? Sadly, what you’ll see is
scores of deconditioned and overweight
men who lack energy and confidence. As
a result, the rest of their life suffers –
home, work, and their social lives.
Deep down we know we can be better,
but pride and ego often prevent us from
doing anything about it. Progress is
stunted all the more by an overwhelming
amount of conflicting and confusing
information about how and what it takes
to be a man.
Man, provider, leader – there are many
terms to define the masculine half of our
species, but one of the most popular is
the very misconstrued idiom, Alpha Male.
Alpha Male used to simply mean ‘one
who led’ – it has become synonymous
with arrogant, macho ‘blokey blokes’. So
instead of a man with compassion and
integrity, one who knows who he is and
carries himself accordingly, we see an
inwardly insecure man who feels the
need for one‑upmanship and dick‑
swinging bravado. It’s easy to see the
difference between these two contrasting
pictures of man.
My name is Mike Campbell, and I’m a
man, have been all my life. Well, once I
grew out of the awkward slightly gangly

only am I a man, I’m a personal trainer
and lifestyle coach. I’ve worked closely
with hundreds of men in the health and
fitness industry for close to a decade. I’m
also a complete training and nutrition
geek. I love researching, reading, and
finding solutions to everyday problems
that my clients face. I like to think of
myself as a logical, perceptive guy who
has gathered in sight and great
understanding of the troubles us modern
men face.
My

REALLY ALL THAT?
ARE YOU A MODERN DAY
ALPHA MALE?
10 HOLIDAYS THAT WILL
CHANGE YOUR LIFE
inescapable conclusion: we men can no
longer work out how to be men.
So what changes do we need to make
to reclaim our male identity? Who should
we role model? What foods should we be
eating? How should we be exercising?
How can we make positive changes in our
attitude? And how can we better manage
our time so we’re not constantly so busy?
Do any of these issues ring true for you?
The truth is, we’re confused about how to
live life!
There’s a drastic decline in the number
of men even remotely resembling the
original Alpha; a man with equal parts
heart and backbone. Where are the role
models for our developing male
population? Where are the strong and
desirable lovers, partners, and providers?
Look around – can you see the
expanding waistlines and the declining
health of the male population? This may
very well be you. There’s many aspects to
being a man and in today’s frantically
paced world, with others constantly
stepping into our space and pushing their
wishes upon us, it’s hard to get any clarity
as to what kind of man you are. Now I
don’t say this to offend or point the finger
– this is more an assessment of men
worldwide. For some this will come as a
shock because there’s little or no
mainstream recognition that a problem
even exists.
That’s why I hold the mirror up through
this and future articles to come, to deliver
to you some simple solutions, but also
bring the problem to light. We need to
know, we need to admit it, and we need to
address it, in order to create a new and
modern world that is filled with healthy,
strong, masculine and inspiring men.

n the name of fashion we’ve all
crammed our feet into tight
fitting; stiff shoes at one point, or
subjected them to the unnatural angles
of stiletto high heels. Walking from
meeting to meeting and standing in
them all day, do your shoes leave you
wincing in pain? Mister Minit’s resident
podiatrist, and owner of City Feet
Clinic, Kate McArthur‑Jones shares the
most common foot problems which can
all be easily avoided and simply treated
I
Aching on the balls of your feet
Wearing high‑heels raise your heel and
cause your center of gravity to be
pushed forward, shifting your body
weight onto the balls of your feet. In
fact, 75% of your body’s weight is
applied to the balls of your feet when
wearing heels. Inserting cushioning,
such as a Miss Minit Velvet Soft
Cushion ($9.95), will help ease the
pain and give your shoe a bit of extra
padding for those occasions where
high heels are a must!
Lower back pain
After spending a day walking around in
heels most people feel a bit of pain in
their lower back, this is caused by the
way the high‑heels place the foot. High‑
heels put feet into an unnatural
position, affecting both the foot and
your posture. Taking shorter strides will
reduce the load on the hip flexors and
reduce any lower back pain.
Tight around the toes
It’s quite self‑evident cramming your
toes into a narrow toe box, or ignoring
the pain can also cause damage to
nerves, toes and toe nails, it can even
cause bunions. The problem of too‑
tight‑shoes actually has a very simple
solution; Mister Minit can stretch
leather shoes by up to half a size.
Another issue of having a reduced
internal space at the front of your
shoes is that you can cause swollen
joints or pesky nodules to develop on
your toes. These nodules are the result
of pressure points caused by ill‑fitting
shoes. A number of solutions exist
including Miss Minit gel heel grips
($6.95) to help keep the shoe secure
to the foot. Layering comfort items
such as Miss Minit Foam Latex
Cushions ($9.95) and Miss Minit
Velvet Cushions ($9.95) will assist
pushing the toes forward and keep
them from holding onto your shoes.
Stretched Achilles Tendons
Your Achilles tendon run up the back
of your leg from the heel and is easily
injured from prolonged high‑heel
wearing. The tendon is designed to be
flexible, it’s meant to move easily
when the foot moves around. But
prolonged high‑heel wearing can
shorten the tendon because the tendon
is tightened as the heel is constantly
pointed upwards. To avoid serious
damage to the Achilles tendon you
should avoid wearing heels for long
periods, and also avoid wearing them
on consecutive days.
The good news is you don’t have to
give up high heels for good, but to avoid
any long term damage here are Kate’s
five top remedies:
• Next time you’re out shoe
shopping make a few sensible
decisions – try and select shoes
with low heels and a wide heel
base, or even better, a slightly
thicker heel. Narrow, stiletto‑type
heels provide little support for
your feet.
• Make sure your shoes fit properly.
You don’t want to buy shoes were
your feet are sliding around. Slip
in a pair of the Miss Minit Gel
Heel Cushions ($9.95) to ensure
a snug fit.
• Try and wear heels on the days you
know you don’t have as much
walking or standing to do.
• Wear soft insoles like Miss Minit
Foam Latex Cushions ($9.95) to
reduce impact and push feet away
from the toe box.
• Alternate your shoes, wear heels
one day, a wedge the next and
then some flats to give your feet
a rest.
