What kind of research do you do for a book?
Depends on the characters’ occupations/
hobbies. For example: with It Had to be You, I
did a lot of research on horticulture common
to the Maine coast and amateur hockey, which
is now my second-favorite indoor sport. Try
Just Once More called for extensive research into
police mounted patrol units. And, for grins and
giggles, I spent a day making rounds with an
equine vet.
Who are some of your other favorite authors to
read? Favorite books? Favorite series? Who, if
anyone, has influenced your writing?
John Sandford’s police procedurals featuring
Lucas Davenport (the Prey series) and Virgil
Flowers. His characters are well-rounded and
brutally sarcastic.
The late John R. Maxim wrote a series of politi-
cal thrillers set during the Cold War. Paul Ban-
nerman led a group of contract killers trying to
go straight, but the government refuses to leave
them alone in their privacy. This is a group of
flawed human beings with compelling goals
and motivation.
9
Robert B. Parker’s
Jesse Stone series.
Again, a flawed,
brilliantly sarcastic
hero.
