COUPLES CRAVE CONFLICT By : Alice Orr

Whenever these two are together , overt or at least covert , tension roils between them . That upheaval gives the scene intensity and keeps your story moving at a compelling pace . We as readers are caught up in that pace and carried along for what we hope will be a wild ride .
Such a scene must be written at the top of your form . You must select actions , gestures and dialogue that will inflict the greatest possible impact on your reader . If you make this a casual interaction , your story momentum slows or , at worst , fails to be established at all .
Never squander the dramatic potential of a scene between your romantic couple . Take full advantage of the opportunity their struggles give you for maximizing tension . Make sure their heart-pounding interaction emphasizes that something momentous is at stake in your story .
Something momentous is also at stake in the relationship between these two characters . Your scenes become the arena for playing out their crucial issues . By the end of every scene , the situation of each character , and their relationship to each other , should have changed .
Do not completely resolve their struggle until late in the story , or at the very end . Keep your readers , and your characters , in suspenseful anticipation of what their fate will finally be . M e a n wh i l e , this anticipation is continually heightened and intensified by how relentlessly Your Couple Craves Conflict — and how brilliantly you portray them doing so .
