Marybeth was a jangle of nerves . What if he never showed ? She paced in front of her front door .
The doorbell rang , making her jump . She took a deep breath and opened the door . Brian was wearing a suit , like he did earlier , but the cut was different . He took her breath away . A bouquet of flowers rested in his hand . “ These are for you .” “ Thank you , they ’ re beautiful .” The riot of color caught her eyes …
wait that ’ s a floating body part need to fix this …
The riot of color filled her vision , but she didn ’ t have time to sort out what type of flowers he had gotten her . She handed it to Peaches , who had been hiding away from the door .
Brian offered her his arm and escorted her to his car . Not knowing where they were going had her looking at everything as he drove to their destination . She half expected him to pull up to his mother ’ s house because she had always loved the woman ’ s cooking .
They drove to the college and Brian pulled in front of a beautiful Victorian home that had been converted into a restaurant . Marybeth turned to stare at Brian , “ This place is awfully expensive .”
Brian didn ’ t answer . Instead , he pulled up to the valet and handed them his keys . One of the attendants helped her out of the car .
“ The owner is a new client of mine ,” he said softly in her ear as he pressed his hand against the small of her back .
“ Ah , Brian . Good to see you .” The owner took them to a secluded table by a window .
“ Thanks for squeezing us in . I know you ’ re booked for months .”
“ You helped me invest my money properly and set up a good program for my employees . You are family . “ He held out the chair for Marybeth . “ So . This is the young lady you told me about ?” Brian nodded . “ She is quite pretty .” He winked at Brian . “ I shall bring the champagne .” “ Champagne ?” “ I want to celebrate us starting over .” At her silence he added , “ We are starting over , right ?” “ We never really started , Brian .” “ I did take you to the prom .” “ Well , yeah , but you only asked me because neither one of us had a date and we wanted to go .”
“ Then to you it wasn ’ t a date , but to me it was .” He took her hand in his . “ So was every time we went to the movies together or attended parties . Anything that put us together .” “ How was I so clueless ?” “ I think deep down you knew . That ’ s why you never had a crush on any of the boys in school and if they showed any interest , you shut them down .” He smiled . “ It made me very happy .” “ Then why did you leave ?” “ I wanted to make a name for myself . My plan was to come back and get you , but the job didn ’ t go as planned . I found I hated it . I tried to find something better but couldn ’ t . I had to come back here to find my dream job and my dream girl .” “ You never should have left .” “ I know , but I ’ m known for my bonehead moves .” “ Yes .” She laughed . “ You are .” “ Love me anyways ?” “ Very much .”
