THE DREAM SCENE VERSUS THE DREAM OF THE BOOK By : Alice Orr

Plus — As I have Already Said — We Have Seen this Scene Too Many Times . Blame movies . Blame TV . Blame binging cable series . These media love such sequences , because they are so visual and mesmerizing in those forms that they get repeated over and over again . Not only with dreams , but also in scenes where the character is drugged or experiencing any variety of extra-normal psychic states .
Books are Different — Especially Fiction Books . A story , any story , must capture us and not let go . It must catapult us into its make-believe world and imprison our consciousness in that world . If you must include a dream scene in your novel , make sure it enhances the plot , maybe by revealing something significant about your main character . And — keep it short .
Which Brings Us Back to the Dream of the Book . We are enthralled by your character . Immersed in “ What will happen next ?” Kidnapped from our real lives . We have lost day-to-day consciousness . We cannot awaken . We do not want to awaken . We are hooked , without hope of escape . We are exactly where you , as storyteller , want us to be . Disappeared into The Dream of Your Book .
