IN HIS CORNER
By: Linda Carroll-Bradd
The Plot:
For ten years, Viktor Andrusha
muscled his way from bare-knuckle
street brawler to heavyweight boxing
champion. A brutal battle two years ear-
lier impaired his vision and his opponent
died. Urged by his manager, Viktor set-
tles for bouts in smaller venues farther
west until he can land the opportunity
for one last big match to restore honor
to the family name.
Thwarted from attending medical
college, nurse Odette Hildebrand leaves
her father‟s clinic to help relatives relocate to Montana Territory.
In the woods near Sweetwater Springs, she is drawn by the sound
of sweet music and meets a shy man with a battered face. Viktor
and Odette make a pact: he‟ll receive her treatments while she
studies the effects of different herbs, hoping to create a market-
able remedy. Her skill heals his wounded exterior, but can she
live with knowing he‟ll receive more, or worse, injuries in the
upcoming exhibition fight?
An Excerpt
About ten feet away walked a petite woman with wavy blonde
hair. A dark cloak covered all but the hem of a plain brown skirt.
Her wide-eyed expression reminded him of his face‟s bruises and
cuts. “Ma‟am, don‟t be alarmed.” Normally, he remained in seclu-
sion for several days following a fight. But something about Sweet-
water Springs and the surrounding prairie made him itch to get out-
doors.
Frowning, she closed the distance. “However did you receive
such a beating, sir?” A pale hand lifted toward his face but paused
in mid-air. “No matter the cause. What have you used for treat-
ment?”
This woman didn‟t cringe from the sight of his injuries. Up
close, he saw her eyes were a green-brown shade with flecks of
gold. As her intense gaze moved over his face he imagined her
touching his skin. When was the last time anyone, especially a total
stranger, expressed concern?

daughters, Linda now writes heartwarming contemporary and historical stories with a touch of humor and a bit
of sass from her home in the southern California mountains.
